Hours: Full-time contract (Irregular Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and public holidays)
Location: Bowmanville (Darlington Provincial Park)
Rate of Pay: To be determined

The Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters (OFAH) is currently seeking a passionate and hardworking individual to join the OFAH as the Waterfowl Unit Technician for the controlled waterfowl hunt at Darlington Provincial Park (DPP). This is an exciting opportunity to help the OFAH maintain high quality and accessible migratory bird hunting opportunities in Ontario. The successful applicant will have considerable knowledge of federal and provincial hunting regulations and applied expertise/experience hunting migratory birds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Visually inspect and confirm, prior to issuing a hunting permit, that each hunter has the required valid federal and provincial hunting permits on their person according to the regulations;
  • Collect and record the required information on the hunter registration card prior to issuing a hunting permit. As well, collect and record each hunter’s daily hunting results on the hunter’s registration card, ensuring all bird species are correctly identified;
  • Ensure that all hunters holding valid permits for that day, exit the unit before closing the hunt office;
  • Sell OFAH memberships;
  • Establish, maintain, shut down, and properly store the temporary hunt office (e.g., trailer);
  • Maintain and repair all hunting blinds (as needed);
  • Maintain and repair (as needed) boat, motor, generator, signs, and other equipment used to support the hunt;
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of hunt participation, harvest, etc.;
  • Reporting on hunt activities on a weekly, monthly, and seasonal basis, including making recommendations for actions that will improve hunt administration efficiency, maximize participation, or enhance hunter experience;
  • Answer phone calls and give accurate information; and
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications:

  • College or university education in biology, fish and wildlife, environmental science, or work-related experience in relevant fields;
  • Strong knowledge of federal and provincial hunting regulations and hunting migratory birds; and
  • Experience in building/maintaining duck blinds is an asset.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Essential basic math skills and ability to process cash payments;
  • Essential computer skills (MS Office);
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate a boat, generator, hand tools, and other equipment as needed;
  • Field work experience including ability to lift heavy weights (10-50kg), to work in cold/wet conditions, and be on feet for extended periods of time;
  • Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and team skills; and
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s licence (Class G);
  • Valid outdoors card with accredit hunter;
  • Valid firearms licence;
  • Valid pleasure craft operators card;
  • Valid Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR & AED certification (as a minimum);and
  • Valid OFAH membership (required at the time of hire).
  • OFAH employees are required to complete a criminal record check every three years.
