The VOICE of Anglers and Hunters since 1928

Small Game

Small game in Ontario, refers to certain species of game birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.  The management and regulations for these species is the responsibility of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).  Many new and prospective hunters start out hunting grouse, rabbit, turkey or squirrel because they are relatively abundant, and they don’t have to go far to take part.  The use of sporting dogs in game bird hunting adds a different element to the hunting experience and often appeals to dog enthusiasts as well as hunters.      Small game hunting regulations in Ontario cover a variety of species across a vast province, creating a complex and sometimes confusing system.  The OFAH has been advocating for a complete review of the small game hunting regulations to streamline seasons and to allow hunting opportunities that reflect current small game populations.  We are recommending an update on the value of small game hunting in Ontario, as well as updated monitoring of small game populations and invested habitat management.  The OFAH, its members and volunteers are very interested in assisting the MNRF with gathering small game population and habitat information to promote hunter involvement.
