Youths recognized for their conservation efforts

Program honoured at 85th OFAH Fish & Wildlife Conference

The East Elgin Secondary School Environmental Leadership Program combines classroom learning with hands on work in the field. With a focus on biology and environmental geography, students experience first hand how their efforts today will make for a better environment in the future. Their hard work was recognized Friday, March 15, 2013 at the 85th Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Fish & Wildlife Conference in Mississauga.

The Environmental Leadership Program was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Junior Conservation Award. A group of students were on hand to express their appreciation and to receive the honour from Deputy Minister David O’Toole.

Another young conservationist was recognized for her work. Tori Edwards of the Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Conservation Club was awarded the OFAH Heritage Junior Award. Tori’s long list of activities include volunteering with the September campout and mentored waterfowl hunt, selling fundraising tickets, assisting with archery instruction on youth archery day, and assisting with the OFAH Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp, to name a few. This is the second time in four years Tori has received this award.

Friday’s events were livestreamed and can be viewed at www.ofah.org/conference. The conference was a three-day event, which attracted more than 450 attendees from across the province.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 710 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest nonprofit fishing, hunting and conservation-based organization in Ontario, and the voice of anglers and hunters. For more information, visit www.ofah.org or follow the OFAH on Facebook and Twitter.
