OFAH to host first-ever youth hunt

Mentored event makes hunting more accessible to youth

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), in partnership with the Elgin, Middlesex and Perth Stewardship Councils, is proud to be hosting its first annual youth hunting event. Youth ages 12 to 17 who want to try hunting will get the chance on Sunday, October 21 with a mentored pheasant hunt.

Bird’s Eye View Pheasant Farm in Baltimore will serve as the backdrop for an action-packed day. There will be a guided tour of the Mill Pond game bird egg hatchery, skeet shooting, game dinner and, of course, the hunt. It is opened to youth who don’t already have their license. They will attend the provincial hunter education and firearms safety license training course October 12, 13 and 14 at the OFAH|Mario Cortellucci Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre in Peterborough for twenty hours of classroom training.

“Modern day lifestyles and landscapes have changed. Today’s youth do not have the hunting opportunities that past generations did,” said Randy Jennings, OFAH Wild Turkey and Youth Hunting Program Coordinator. “Our modern world captivates kids’ interests with easy access to electronic gadgets, such as video games, and communication devices. This ‘perfect storm’ disconnects our youth from nature and understanding the vital role anglers and hunters play in fish and wildlife conservation.”

Both the training and mentored hunt are free of charge, but space is limited. Registration inquiries will be accepted by email to randy_jennings@ofah.org until September 28. Successful candidates will be notified on October 1.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 675 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest nonprofit fish and wildlife conservation-based organization in Ontario.
