A one-of-a-kind camp for aspiring anglers and hunters

When 27 campers registered for the very first Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp in 2002, no one could have predicted that 11 seasons later the camp would grow to 180 spots which filled just 19 minutes after online registration opened.

“For many young people OFAH youth programs open doors to traditional outdoor experiences that they’re enthusiastic about, but may not have had the opportunity to explore,” said Angelo Lombardo, OFAH Executive Director. “The OFAH and its members strongly believe in providing youth with exposure to activities like hunting and fishing which promote an active lifestyle and conservation values. OFAH Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp is an overnight success story thanks to our passionate promotion of these time-honored traditions.”

The camp takes place on the shores of Fox Lake, in the heart of the Muskokas. During three, four-day camps running July 9-12, July 14-17 and July 19-22, boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18 years try their hand at target shooting, fly tying, archery, kayaking, canoeing, wilderness survival, animal tracks and tree identification and bass fishing. They also receive practical lessons in conservation work such as bird box building and lake studies.

OFAH Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp offers non-stop excitement, including the Hamilton and Area Fly-Fishers and Tyers (HAFFT) fly tying station; archery range with certified instructors; a .22 rifle range, featuring Stoeger Canada firearms; and a fishing tournament. There is also survivor-style leadership and team building initiatives, and the always-popular moose, turkey and deer calling competition.

Year after year, OFAH members contribute to the success of the camp by volunteering not only their expertise, but in many cases their vacation time.

“We are lucky to have so many caring members who want to share their passion for the outdoors with the next generation of anglers and hunters,” said Lombardo.
