Learn More About Ontario’s Invading Species

Anglers, boaters, marina operators, outdoor enthusiasts, lake stewards, and educators. Keep your calendars open on Sunday June 8, 2003 between 9 a.m and 3:00 p.m. for: Alien Invaders: A Workshop for Anglers, Lake Stewards and Educators . Click here for more information.

This one-day workshop, cosponsored by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, (O.F.A.H.), will be held in Windsor at the Cleary International Centre (441 Riverside Drive) as part of the 12th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species. Join biologists and scientists to leam more about the ecological impacts, spread and control of alien invaders such as zebra mussels, purple loosestrife, round goby, spiny water flea, and the emerald ash borer. Widely considered to be one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity, exotic species introductions have had devastating effects on the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem and in particular Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. Recent invasions of these species into the inland lakes and rivers of Ontario have also had severe impacts on aquatic ecosystems and the recreational use of our waterways. Invasions of forest pests such as the emerald ash borer also pose a significant threat to southern Ontario forests.

At the workshop, you will learn about the impacts, spread and prevention of exotic species within your community. The cost to attend is only $10. Registrations are welcome at the door.

For more information on how to register for this workshop, contact the Conference Administrator at 1-800-868-8776 or the O.F.A.H. Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711 or visit www.aquatic-invasive-species-conference-org.
