Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to attend Bring Back the Salmon Event
Restoration Program Partners will Stock Atlantic Salmon in Duffins Creek
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, will help stock yearling Atlantic Salmon in Duffins Creek with local MP Chris Alexander, Mayor Dave Ryan, Ontario Power Generation employees, Fleming College hatchery staff and students from Holy Redeemer Catholic School and Pine Ridge Secondary School. Earlier in the day, the students and Ontario Power Generation employees will improve fish habitat by cleaning up stream banks throughout the park and will participate in stewardship activities led by program partner, Toronto and Region Conservation.

Background: Bring Back the Salmon involves more than 40 partners working to restore the once thriving Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario and its tributaries. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources head the initiative, with support from lead sponsor Ontario Power Generation. The LCBO, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation are also major contributors. The Ministry of Natural Resources is raising production salmon in two facilities, Fleming College is raising Atlantic Salmon in its educational hatchery, and OPG’s Pickering Nuclear Station is also playing host to a small Atlantic Salmon classroom hatchery (released in May).
