The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, (O.F.A.H.), Ontario’s largest nonprofit conservation based organization, is furious over the recent discovery of two dead trumpeter swans which appear to have been killed intentionally.
“The O.F.A.H. has been a proud supporter of Harry Lumsden’s Ontario Trumpeter Swan Restoration Group”, said Mike Reader, O.F.A.H. Executive Director. “The senseless killing of these birds was a sad and completely unnecessary occurrence, particularly since the swans are endangered species which are entitled to special protection”.
Mr. Reader also expressed his serious concern over a local newspaper report, which suggested without apparent justification that hunters killed the birds. “Hunters are overwhelmingly law-abiding citizens and extremely responsible and respectful of wildlife. No responsible hunter would shoot a bird out of season, let alone one which is an endangered species for which there is no hunting season”.
The O.F.A.H. is offering a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever committed this crime and is challenging other conservation groups across the province to do the same.
