OFAH and Students Pitch In for Earth Week
Fifth annual event includes full day of conservation activities
The fifth annual Earth Week/Pitch In event organized by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and its partners is scheduled for Friday, April 15, 2011. The Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program and the Community Stream Steward Program are leading the effort, with assistance from Fleming College, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, Town of Cobourg, Ministry of Natural Resources, Cobourg Trap & Skeet Club and a crew of students from Cobourg District Collegiate Institute East, Cobourg District Collegiate Institute West, and the Ramblers, an environmental group from Holy Cross Secondary School, Peterborough. The group will spend the day improving the streamside environment along Cobourg Brook.
In addition to collecting litter and planting trees at the Cobourg Conservation Area, the students will help release approximately 1,000 Atlantic salmon yearlings into the brook at Danforth Road. Volunteers will start their day at Peace Park and will collect litter while moving northward along the brook, finishing at Elgin Street, where they will plant trees and be treated to a BBQ lunch at the Cobourg Conservation Area. In the afternoon, they will help stock Atlantic Salmon which have been raised by students in the Fish and Wildlife programs at Fleming College.
The Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program and the Community Stream Steward Program are initiatives of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), the province’s largest nonprofit fish and wildlife conservation-based organization. Both programs work in the Cobourg area as part of their mandates to restore and enhance streams, resulting in improved fish habitat. Since 2006, the Atlantic Salmon restoration effort has been working to bring back locally extinct Atlantic salmon to a self-sustaining wild population.
