Local students helping to bring back the salmon
Pioneer Petroleums joins youth in unique environmental initiative
This week, more than 180 Hamilton area elementary students will make their way to the banks of Bronte Creek to release Atlantic salmon. Their efforts are part of an environmental field trip sponsored by Pioneer Petroleums and a classroom hatchery program hosted by the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, with the support of McMaster University’s Let’s Talk Science graduate student volunteers.
Media are invited to cover the stocking of Atlantic salmon on Bronte Creek – a terrific photo opportunity that will feature the release of approximately 400 fish, raised by local students and teachers in their classroom hatcheries. Representatives from Pioneer Petroleums, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Trout Unlimited, Fish For Ever Foundation, and other partners will be on hand. Chest waders are available so that reporters can get close-up shots of this outstanding hands-on conservation work.

| What’s happening: | Fish stocking will follow brief remarks by O.F.A.H. Executive Director Mike Reader and CEO of Pioneer Petroleums, Tim Hogarth. After a picnic lunch, students will participate in conservation games and activities such as dip netting to learn about stream life, and will build nesting boxes for blue birds and wood ducks. |
Stocking the Bronte Creek with Atlantic salmon is all part of an internationally acclaimed endeavour that was spearheaded by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, with more than 40 conservation partners, including Banrock Station Wetland Foundation Canada, LCBO Natural Heritage Fund, Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association, Fish For Ever Foundation, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Helping out with the Bronte Creek event are the Community Stream Steward Program, O.F.A.H. Get Outdoors program, Trout Unlimited Canada, Let’s Talk Science (McMaster University), Oakville and District Rod and Gun Club, and Conservation Halton.
