After 100 years, Atlantic salmon return to Bronte Creek
Pioneer Petroleums joins local students in an environmental project
This week, over 80 Hamilton area elementary students will make their mark in history. It’s all part of an environmental field trip sponsored by Pioneer Petroleums and a classroom hatchery program hosted by the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program.
The media are invited to cover the stocking of Atlantic salmon on Bronte Creek – a terrific photo opportunity that will feature the release of 200 fish, including some raised by local students and teachers in their classroom hatcheries. Representatives from Pioneer Petroleums and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters will also be on hand. Chest waders are available so that reporters can get close-up shots of this outstanding hands-on conservation work.

Date & Start Time: May 21, 2009 – 10:45 am
Where: EASY TO FIND — Lowville Park, in the Village of Lowville, located on Guelph Line six miles north of Dundas Street. Watch for our conservation event directional signs.
What’s happening: Fish stocking will follow a brief overview of the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program. Special guests will include Tim Hogarth, CEO of Pioneer Petroleums. After a picnic lunch, students will participate in conservation games and activities such as dip netting to learn about stream life, and will build nesting boxes for blue birds and wood ducks.
Stocking the Bronte Creek with Atlantic salmon is all part of an internationally acclaimed endeavor that is spearheaded by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, with more than 40 conservation partners, including Banrock Station Wetland Foundation, LCBO Natural Heritage Fund, Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association, Fishing Forever Foundation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.
