CEO and Chief Scientist at Delta Waterfowl honoured at OFAH Annual General Meeting & Fish and Wildlife Conference
PETERBOROUGH – The OFAH/Rick Morgan Professional Conservation Award honours a person who, as part of their employment, made the most significant contribution to conservation within the past year.
Dr. Scott Petrie, a world-renowned leader in waterfowl management and an active member of the hunting community, was named the 2015 winner of the award during the 88th OFAH Annual General Meeting & Fish and Wildlife Conference, held in Mississauga, March 18-19.
Dr. Petrie has been a key contributor to many successes we have seen recently in Ontario for increased waterfowl bag limits and migratory bird hunting opportunities. Some of his other successes include helping to bring a mourning dove season to Ontario, satellite tracking of migratory birds, lesser and greater scaup research, tundra swan research and Waterfowl Heritage Days for youth.
In addition to that, he engaged youth through the annual Long Point Waterfowl Youth Hunting and Conservation course and has provided research on the impact of industrial wind turbines on migratory birds.
“This is a massive honour for me,” Dr. Petrie said upon receiving the award. “I’d like to thank all my graduate students, all my staff, all my volunteers and all of our conservation partners, because we have had a number of successes over the last 18 years and it has been wonderful and it has been a team effort. I’ve always been keen on team efforts.”
Currently the CEO of Delta Waterfowl in Bismark, North Dakota, Dr. Petrie has long been involved with the OFAH, serving as a director-at-large, an OFAH Zone J member, and chair of the OFAH Migratory Birds/Wetlands Advisory Committee. He was also the executive director of the Long Point Waterfowl for 18 years prior to taking on his new position with Delta Waterfowl.
