Georgian Bay club recognized by Windsor Sportsmen

The Georgian Bay Hunters and Anglers Inc. (G.B.H.A.) have a long and proud history of fundraising for fish and wildlife conservation. That tradition continued at an awards ceremony held during the 81st O.F.A.H. Annual General Meeting and Fish and Wildlife Conference on March 19th in Mississauga, where the G.B.H.A. took home the Windsor Sportsmen’s Club trophy for its outstanding fundraising success in 2008.

The G.B.H.A., a member club of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.), sold an impressive 691 books of tickets in support of the 34th Annual O.F.A.H. Conservation Lottery, just behind the Royal City Fishing Club of Guelph, that topped the list at 739 books. The Windsor Sportsmen’s Trophy is awarded to the club that sells the second greatest number of O.F.A.H. Conservation Lottery tickets.

"Fundraising is essential to O.F.A.H. conservation programming," said O.F.A.H. President Jack Hedman, who, with Bruno Vanden Berghe of the O.F.A.H. Zone J Executive, presented the club with their award. "The incredible success of the O.F.A.H. Conservation Lottery comes down to the members and clubs like the Georgian Bay Hunters and Anglers, who demonstrate their dedication to Ontario’s fish and wildlife through fundraising, and by taking on community conservation projects."

Over the many years the O.F.A.H. has run the lottery, it has raised tens of thousands of dollars for conservation. To motivate sellers, and to add some fun to the fundraising process, the O.F.A.H. presents trophies to the two top ticket-selling clubs, the Bert Austin trophy and the Windsor Sportsmen’s Club trophy. The G.B.H.A. is one of only a handful of clubs to have taken first place more than once.

The 2008 lottery prize line-up totaled almost $300,000, with grand prizes that included vehicles, boats and trailers, thanks to sponsorship from Dodge, Lund, and Yamaha. The 35th O.F.A.H. Tickets for the 35th Conservation Lottery are available from participating O.F.A.H. member clubs, and through www.ofah.org/lottery until the draw date, May 29, 2009.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 655 member clubs, the O.F.A.H. is the largest nonprofit, charitable, fishing, hunting and conservation-based organization in Ontario, and the voice of anglers and hunters. For more information, visit www.ofah.org.
