O.F.A.H. supports M.N.R. extension of walleye season on Lake Nipissing

As part of broader changes to the Ontario Fishing Regulations, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has announced the extension of the winter season for walleye on Lake Nipissing.

“The Ministry’s extension of the walleye season to include the March break, will provide anglers in Ontario, particularly families, with an additional opportunity to take part in a great winter tradition on Lake Nipissing,” said Dave Brown, O.F.A.H. Fisheries Biologist. “The Minister has repeatedly stated that he is looking for every chance to provide members of the outdoors community with new or enhanced opportunities to fish and hunt in Ontario. The extension of the walleye season on Lake Nipissing, enhancements of the walleye season on Lake Erie, the extension of the bass season across the province and the re-opening of the walleye fishery on Golden Lake are steps in the right direction.”

Although changes to the complete package of Ontario fishing regulations are still pending, and discussions with the O.F.A.H. and others in the angling community around the proposed changes to the regulations are ongoing, the O.F.A.H. is pleased to see that the Minister chose to move forward with these regulatory changes at this time. Based upon the best available science, these changes recognize the importance of protecting the sustainability of Ontario’s valuable fish resources, while providing for an improved recreational fishery for millions of Ontario anglers.
