On March 20, the Royal City Fishing Club of Guelph was recognized for its contribution to the conservation of Ontario’s fish and wildlife resources for the second year in a row.
The club was awarded the Bruno Vanden Berghe OFAH/Conservation Lottery trophy for fundraising success at the 87th OFAH AGM and Fish & Wildlife Conference in Mississauga.
“This is the second year in a row this club has taken home this honour,” said OFAH Executive Director Angelo Lombardo. “OFAH clubs dedicate countless hours volunteering for this lottery, knowing that their commitment to conservation will be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations.”
The Royal City Fishing Club sold a whopping 1,184 books of tickets in 2014.
The award, which began 37 years ago and has gone to only six clubs in its history, was renamed recently after the late Bruno Vanden Berghe, a long-time, dedicated OFAH volunteer.
The Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association (SGFPA) was awarded the Windsor Sportsmen’s Club trophy for the ninth time in recognition of its success in raising funds through the OFAH Conservation Lottery.
The Windsor Sportsmen’s Club created this trophy to acknowledge the OFAH member club selling the second largest number of tickets for the lottery. SGFPA sold an incredible 772 books of tickets, some of the proceeds of which helped to fund local conservation efforts, making them double winners.
“Realizing the significant role that the OFAH Conservation Lottery plays in the future of Ontario’s fish and wildlife, and that the sale of each and every ticket contributes greatly to the cause, it’s an honour to present this award,” Lombardo said.
Each year, OFAH member clubs across the province vie for the honour of being one of the top ticket sellers for the highly popular OFAH Conservation Lottery.
The OFAH also acknowledged the outstanding efforts of the Halton Sportsmen’s Club that finished in third place, the Canadian Forces Ottawa Fish & Game Club that finished fourth and the South Central Ontario Fish and Wildlife Association Inc., which took fifth place.
