Public Safety Minister puts last nail in the gun registry’s coffin
O.F.A.H. applauds government’s legislation to scrap registry

Legislation to scrap the long gun registry is great news for anyone who cares about public safety and their hard earned tax-dollars, says the province’s largest fishing, hunting and firearms owners’ organization, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

“The O.F.A.H. congratulates the government for delivering on its promise to table legislation that will abolish the long gun registry once and for all,” said O.F.A.H. Executive Director, Mike Reader. “The long gun registry has not prevented crime, failed to enhance public safety and has cost the public over $1 billion in the process.”

Following up on a license fee waiver and gun registry amnesty announcement on May 17, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day delivered on his government’s promise to introduce an amendment to the Criminal Code. Passage of the new legislation, which will likely be voted on this fall, will eliminate the ill-fated long gun registry so that tax-dollars can be redirected to support increased border security and provide more funding for police and social service programs that will actually work to reduce crime.

“The list of chronic operation failures, contract anomalies, mismanaged budgets, accounting nightmares, privacy and security infringements, and just day-to-day bureaucratic incompetence surrounding the gun registry has beleaguered taxpayers for too long,” said Reader, adding that it is encouraging that this government is moving quickly on the gun registry issue which the O.F.A.H. has helped to keep in the forefront for many years.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters represents tens of thousands of law-abiding hunters, farmers, target shooters and collectors. Repealing the long gun registry is one of the biggest, most important issues the O.F.A.H. has ever tackled.
