Celebrating 20 years of hunting wild turkeys in Ontario

The opening of the 2006 wild turkey hunting season on April 25 marks an incredible milestone in conservation history — 20 years of turkey hunting in Ontario!

“It seems like only yesterday that the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters laid the groundwork for what has become one of North America’s greatest conservation success stories, and, by far, Ontario’s newest and fastestgrowing hunting tradition,” said Cam Brownson, host and producer of the Federation’s popular television program The Angler & Hunter.

With Ontario’s wild turkey population now estimated at over 80,000, it’s no wonder that anticipation is mounting for “opening day.” Over the next few days, tens of thousands of turkey hunters will be practicing their turkey calls, scouting the woods and listening for gobblers. Brownson describes wild turkey hunting as “an obsession”
