Pickering’s unsung volunteers recognized by Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters

The behind the scenes work of Ontario’s leading volunteers were duly recognized recently at the annual conference of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) in Toronto.

With over 78,000 members and 650 member clubs, the O.F.A.H. always has lots of individuals to recognize. This year, the Federation honored a couple of its finest unsung volunteer hero’s, Pat and Vern Mason, of Pickering. On February 17, the pair proudly accepted the Gord Blake Memorial Award that symbolizes outstanding volunteer dedication to Ontario’s natural resources.

Vern and Pat have been members of the O.F.A.H. for over 40 years. The husband and wife volunteer duo have been at the forefront of literally hundreds of community and provincial conservation events, namely the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show and Spring Fishing Show. As members of the Pickering Rod and Gun Club, Vern and Pat work tirelessly on conservation fundraising dinners, duck and moose calling competitions, local conservation projects, and most notably, teaching kids about responsible fishing and hunting.

“Pat and Vern are among the Federation’s most sought-after volunteers,” said Dave Pind, O.F.A.H. Marketing and Show Coordinator. “They have invested literally thousands of volunteer hours to help introduce young people and their families to the great outdoors. The O.F.A.H. is very lucky to be supported by such outstanding volunteers,” he said.
