O.F.A.H. issues warning about M.N.R. and Cape Croker talks

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) is monitoring ongoing negotiations between the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Cape Croker band which could potentially allow native gill netting into the shallows of Colpoys Bay and Owen Sound Bay on Lake Huron.

“We don’t like the rumors we’re hearing about negotiations between the Ontario Government and Cape Croker and Saugeen Bands,” said O.F.A.H. President, John Ford, an Owen Sound-area resident and a longtime volunteer of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association.

“While we support native treaty rights, the O.F.A.H. is absolutely opposed to altering longstanding boundaries for native commercial fishing around Bruce Peninsula. Any changes which would allow for a native commercial fishery in the bays will have a detrimental effect on local fishing, fish stocking, volunteer hatchery projects, as well businesses and retailers who depend on the economic boom of this area’s world-renowned recreational fishery,” said Ford.

The O.F.A.H. is urging both the Ministry of Natural Resources and native bands to exercise extreme caution in reaching an agreement that does not infringe upon equal fishing opportunities for all residents.

“Under the agreement currently being negotiated with the M.N.R., it’s our understanding that the Chippewas of Nawash will be receiving additional commercial fishing opportunities in the area. It defies belief that the Ontario Government would also give them permission to take fish from the very same recreational fishery that so many local clubs and volunteers have spent years rebuilding,” added Ford.

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is the province’s leading hunting, fishing and conservation organization representing 80,000 members and over 640 member clubs and associations.
