Modern women get outdoors with the O.F.A.H.

This event is proudly supported by Canadian Tire

“Spas and shopping are nice but what women really want is a rustic outdoor experience that offers fishing, hunting, wilderness survival and target practice,” says Rhonda Barkley, coordinator of the upcoming Women’s Outdoors Weekend (W.O.W.)

Presented by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) the highly acclaimed Women’s Outdoors Weekend will welcome over 150 participants of all ages and all walks of life, and from all across the province. The event takes place September 17-19, at the Y.M.C.A. Camp PineCrest, near Gravenhurst.

“The O.F.A.H. Women’s Outdoors Weekend is a perfect opportunity for individuals to acquire outdoor skills, learn about conservation and meet like-minded friends,” said Ms. Barkley. Hands-on workshops cover a full range of activities including fishing techniques, archery, target shooting, canoeing, outdoor cooking and survival training. Participants will also enjoy a captivating presentation by the Ministry of Natural Resources’ crime investigation K-9 unit.

The O.F.A.H. is a recognized leader in promoting female participation in the outdoors, and the annual O.F.A.H. Women’s Outdoors Weekends responds to women’s growing interest in outdoors pursuits, namely fishing and hunting.

In 2003, O.F.A.H. organizers had a waiting list of aspiring outdoors women, and this year the number in attendance will surpass all expectations for this program.

“Women are finally speaking up about their inherent fascination for the great outdoors,” said Ms. Barkley, an avid angler, hunter and conservationist. “In Canada, women make up 25 percent of resident adult anglers and 15 percent of hunters. Obviously, more women want to make the outdoors a greater part of their personal and family lifestyle and the O.F.A.H. Women’s Outdoors Weekend is the only program to fulfill this need.”
