O.F.A.H. brings fishing to Ontario

Many residents are not aware that Ontario offers world class fishing, in some cases, just minutes from major urban centers.

Newcomers to the fishing experience may also be confused or overwhelmed by the enormous variety of fishing equipment and tackle. That’s why the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is taking its renowned O.F.A.H. Tackle Share Program on the road this summer.

While fishing is the central theme of the program, the traveling O.F.A.H. Tackle Share program will emphasize conservation of our waterways and the importance of healthy aquatic habitat.

Explaining the reasons behind the program, O.F.A.H. Executive Director Mike Reader said, “It is well known that people who are active in the outdoors tend to be more aware of their natural surroundings. As a result they care more about their natural resources and are more likely to be active conservationists.”

“As well, fishing is such a wholesome, healthy, family-oriented activity. We want to give people the chance to participate,” Reader added.

O.F.A.H. Tackle Share is now taking bookings for its two person crew that will arrive with all equipment necessary for a great day including rods, reels, tackle, bait and life jackets. The day begins indoors with a fun, interactive fishing seminar, complete with a slide show and activity centers.

The afternoon brings an opportunity to apply newly acquired knowledge and catch a fish from the shore of a nearby pond, river or lake.

O.F.A.H. Tackle Share was launched three years ago to provide a fishing tackle lending system for young and new anglers. Just like a library, fishing rods and reels as well as basic tackle is loaned out. But the program isn’t just limited to libraries. Provincial parks, conservation authorities, and community service organizations are also part of the program.
