The VOICE of Anglers and Hunters since 1928

Women’s Outdoor Weekend more popular than ever

Less than a week after information packages were sent out for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ (O.F.A.H.) highly acclaimed Women’s Outdoor Weekend, organizers are overwhelmed by the number of registrations pouring in.

“The response for this year’s event is stronger than ever,” Rhonda Barkley, O.F.A.H. program coordinator and active hunter and angler explains. “Obviously more women want to make the outdoors a greater part of their personal and family lifestyles and the Women’s Outdoor Weekend is the only program to fulfill this need. We offer a fantastic variety of activities and participants really enjoy our positive, ‘can-do’ approach to learning.”

Slated for September 17-19, 2004 at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Leslie M. Frost Centre, the weekend is a perfect opportunity for individuals to acquire outdoor skills, learn about conservation and meet other like-minded women. Hands-on workshops cover a full range of activities including fishing techniques, archery, target shooting, canoeing, outdoor cooking and survival training. Conservation workshops also provide information on fish and wildlife projects that participants can start in their own communities.

“The Women’s Outdoor Weekend is the ideal starting point for women of all ages to learn lifelong skills and gain confidence in wilderness activities,” Barkley says. “This year, the program will also offer special advanced workshops for past participants who want to develop their skills even further.”

For almost a decade, the O.F.A.H. Women’s Outdoor Programs have inspired hundreds of women from urban and rural centres to participate in traditional outdoor activities. The program has been a success because of the non-competitive, peer-supportive atmosphere. The outdoors workshops are taught by women, for women and address the needs of participants.
