O.F.A.H. kids’ fishing seminar coming to a shoreline near you

Thousands of children will soon catch free fishing lessons courtesy of Travelling Tackle Share, a renowned youth outreach program of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.).

“It’s all part of our campaign to expose new generations to fishing and conservation,” said Robert Pye, O.F.A.H. Youth Services Representative. The program is delivered in the eye-catching TackleShare-mobile, equipped with fishing gear, conservation activity centres, kids’ prizes, and expert fishing advice.

Mr. Pye said his crew of O.F.A.H. summer students are now on tour covering over 25,000 kilometres while visiting 65 venues including Ontario Parks, public libraries, conservation areas, youth camps, and resorts. O.F.A.H. Travelling Tackle Share is a three-hour, hands-on fishing presentation that teaches kids how to identify fish and understand their habitat. Topics such as catch and release and fishing techniques are also covered. Afterwards, participants put their training to the test with an opportunity to wet a line using equipment provided by O.F.A.H. Tackle Share.

Thanks to O.F.A.H. Tackle Share, kids and families can sign out rods, reels and tackle the same way they would borrow library materials. Since its launch in 1998, this popular fishing equipment lending program has enjoyed enormous success growing to over 120 Tackle Share loaner sites province-wide. O.F.A.H. Tackle Share is proudly sponsored by Canadian Tire, Shimano, Berkley, Lucky Strike, KTL Canada, and Ontario Parks.

Mr. Pye noted that O.F.A.H. Tackle Share has really encouraged kids’ inherent fascination for the outdoors, particularly among Ontario’s urban youth. It gives them a positive alternative for summertime recreation.

“Fishing is a healthy, outdoor tradition that helps strengthen families. For kids, in particular, it’s a confidence-building activity and a refreshing disconnection from computers and television. What’s more, fishing provides an awesome lesson in outdoor education kids become better informed about our environment and the pressing need to protect it,” he said.
