As Ontario’s spring metamorphosis welcomes another fishing season, thousands of anglers will be lured to docksides, shorelines and waterways to take part in Ontario’s most popular outdoor pastime.
Better known locally as “opening day,” the start of spring fishing season is celebrated by outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and all walks of life.
While recreational fishing is promoted as a healthy, family-orientated activity, a revolutionary new program is casting across Ontario giving aspiring anglers a chance to enjoy this sport.
“O.F.A.H. Tackle Share makes it easy to go fishing,” said Robert Pye, youth programs coordinator for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. “Thanks to O.F.A.H. Tackle Share, children and families can sign out rods, reels, and tackle supplies the same way they would borrow library materials,” said Pye.
O.F.A.H. Tackle Share, the first and only program of its kind in Canada, has effectively bolstered interest in fishing sports, particularly among Ontario’s urban youth.
Since its launch in 1998, O.F.A.H. Tackle Share has become a province-wide success with 110 loaner sites hosted by participating Ontario Parks, public libraries, and Conservation Authorities. O.F.A.H. Tackle Share is proudly sponsored by: Canadian Tire, Shimano, Berkley, Ontario Parks, KTL Canada and Lucky Strike Bait Works.
“Many O.F.A.H. Tackle Share participants have reported catching their very first fish. With so many young people now growing up in cities, the O.F.A.H. believes it’s important to promote outdoor participation,” said Mr. Pye, explaining that just one fishing experience helps foster environmental awareness, and inspires a lifelong dedication to conserving our natural resources.
