Manitoulin Conservationist Wins OFAH Larry Wallace Memorial Volunteer Award
Bill Strain, president of the Little Current Fish and Game Club on Manitoulin Island, received the Larry Wallace Memorial Volunteer Award at the OFAH Annual General Meeting and Fish and Wildlife Conference held on March 14, 2014. The award recognizes a person or persons who have helped to ensure the future of conservation by sharing their experience, knowledge and love of the outdoors with youth.
Larry Wallace was a long-time OFAH member, zone chair, director and dedicated conservationist. He had a keen interest in introducing youth to the wonders of the outdoors and recognized that youth were key to the future of hunting and angling.
While several outstanding candidates were nominated for the award, the judges thought that Bill stood out from the rest. They noted that he is a great role model for young people, and praised him for bringing kids, the community and anglers together in projects that make a difference on the ground.
“For over 25 years, Bill has been involved in the successful pickerel rehabilitation program on Manitoulin Island, has promoted the walleye fishery, as well as the conservation of the species and the environment through a variety of activities,” said OFAH President Bill Blackwell. “He serves as a fine example of what it means to give back to the community and how important it is to engage the youth of today as they are the future stewards of our natural resources.”
The OFAH also acknowledges the outstanding work of nominees, David Field and Kenneth Beaston.
