Fish and Wildlife Grants Awarded at OFAH 86th AGM

OFAH/OFAH Zone G Wildlife Research Grant Josée-Anne Otis, a resident of St. Nöel, Québec, and a Master’s of Science student in the Environmental & Life Sciences program at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, was awarded the OFAH/OFAH Zone G Wildlife Research Grant for her study involving the eastern wolf, coyote and their hybrids.

OFAH/Dave Ankney/Sandi Johnson Award For Avian Ecology
Matt Palumbo, a graduate of both the State University of New York and Mississippi State University, currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Western Ontario (UWO), was awarded the first OFAH/Dave Ankney/Sandi Johnson Award for Avian Ecology for his study of habitat selection of American Black Ducks and Mallards in the Lower Great Lakes Region. The award is named after the late Dr. Davison Ankney, former OFAH president and professor of Zoology at UWO, and his wife Sandi.

OFAH/Toronto Sportsmen’s Show Fisheries Research Grant
Aimee Lee Houde, a resident of London, Ontario and PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario, is the recipient of the OFAH/Toronto Sportsmen’s Show Fisheries Research Grant for her work studying thiamine deficiencies for Great Lakes salmonids which can increase mortality and decrease reproductive success.

OFAH/St. Catharine’s Game and Fish Association Fish & Wildlife Research Grant
Lena Vanden Elsen, a resident of Scotland, Ontario and a Master’s student at the University of Western Ontario, is this year’s recipient of the OFAH/St. Catharine’s Game and Fish Association Fish & Wildlife Research Grant for her study of environmental factors influencing autumn and winter distributions of dabbling ducks in the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways of North America.

OFAH/Oakville and District Rod & Gun Club Conservation Research Grant
Matt Dyson, a resident of Port Rowan, Ontario and a Master’s student at the University of Western Ontario, was awarded the OFAH/Oakville and District Rod & Gun Club Conservation Research Grant for his study of nest success, survival and habitat selection of female wood ducks and their broods from nest boxes at Long Point, which will contribute original ecological knowledge and help refine conservation and management strategies.
