Conservation Honour for Canadian Wildlife Service Biologist
The OFAH/Rick Morgan Professional Conservation Award acknowledges the person who, as part of their employment, has made the most significant contribution to conservation during the previous year. Jack Hughes, a biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) since 1991, was selected as the 2013 winner of the award, which was presented at the 86th OFAH Annual General Meeting and Fish & Wildlife Conference in Mississauga on March 15, 2014.
“Jack Hughes has spent the better part of the last twenty years working tirelessly on issues impacting on migratory birds and helping to increase hunting opportunities in Ontario,” said OFAH President Bill Blackwell. “Throughout his career, he has contributed to the implementation of programs related to the study, monitoring and managing of diverse wildlife populations.”
As part of his responsibilities at the CWS, Jack has been responsible for negotiating a wealth of agreements, and building and maintaining partnerships related to wildlife conservation with a diversity of groups, including anglers, hunters, and government and aboriginal organizations in both the U.S. and Canada. In Ontario, he has been primarily responsible for waterfowl population management, including surveys, banding and hunting regulations. As manager of Population Conservation, he is also responsible for the CWS Migratory Bird Program in Ontario.
“Hunters and waterfowl researchers owe Jack Hughes a debit of gratitude for his contributions over the course of a distinguished career,” added Blackwell.
