Postgraduate students supported in their research

OFAH and partners award research grants and internship

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), the province’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization, is pleased to provide four postgraduate students with research grants to continue their scientific studies. In addition, the OFAH and BrokerLink have partnered once again to offer a fish and wildlife internship position. The presentations were made at the 85th OFAH Annual General Meeting and Fish & Wildlife Conference, which took place March 14-16, 2013 in Mississauga.

The OFAH/Mike Reader/Toronto Sportsmen’s Show/Fleming College Scholarship Award was presented for the first time this year. Walter Oster, CEO and Chair of the Canadian National Sportsmen’s Shows presented a $20,000 scholarship commitment in recognition of former OFAH Executive Director Mike Reader’s 25 years of service to the Federation. Support will be spread over the next 10 years to help Fleming College Fish and Wildlife students. Ashley Lloyd is the first deserving winner of this award, having excelled at the many courses she has taken through the Fish and Wildlife Technician Program at Fleming, maintaining a 3.9 grade point average.

Kayla Gradil, a Master of Science candidate at the University of Western Ontario received the OFAH/Toronto Sportsmen’s Show Fisheries Research Grant Award. The title of her research is “Adaptive Capacity of Thermal Tolerance in Atlantic Salmon.”

The OFAH/OFAH Zone G Wildlife Research Grant Award 2013 recipient is Keith Munro, a Master of Science degree candidate at Trent University. His project title is “Application of Risk and Refuge Effects to Hunting as a Tool for Managing White-Tailed Deer Populations.”

Nicola Day, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Guelph was honoured with the OFAH/Oakville and District Rod & Gun Club Conservation Research Grant Award. Her research is titled “Plant-soil Feedbacks and the Investigation of Fungal Root Pathogens to Control Dog-Strangling Vine,” which is an invasive plant.

The OFAH/BrokerLink Fish & Wildlife Conservation Internship was presented to Katie Cook, who recently completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Honours in Environmental Sciences majoring in Ecology at the University of Guelph. Katie will work with OFAH fish and wildlife staff at head office in Peterborough over the summer months.
