100 New Canadians to Go Fishing with OFAH

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) has partnered with the New Canadians Centre (NCC) of Peterborough and Coleman Canada to host the New Canadians Fishing Event at the OFAH|Mario Cortellucci Hunting & Fishing Heritage Centre and Shimano Pond this Saturday. The event is part of the Peterborough Welcome Pass announced last weekend on Canada Day.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming clients of the New Canadians Centre to our Shimano Pond to experience fishing, perhaps for the first time. We appreciate the opportunity to share a part of our cultural heritage, which is iconically Canadian and extremely important to the local community,” says Robert Pye, Manager of Member Services and Corporate Relations. “Just one fishing experience can spark a lifelong connection with our natural resources, and at the same time, provide a fascinating hands-on environmental lesson about food chains, fish identification, invasive species and the importance of healthy waterways.”

The event coincides with Ontario Family Fishing Week, which means that Canadian residents don’t need a licence to fish. One hundred people are expected to attend the event that runs Saturday morning from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and includes a free pancake breakfast supported by Kawartha Choice Farm Fresh. The OFAH will provide fishing equipment and bait and OFAH volunteers will be on hand to give a fishing lesson to those who would like to learn. Participants also have a chance to win a Coleman camping prize that is valued at $1,000.00.

Coordinated by the Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration (PPCII), the Peterborough Welcome Pass is a partnership funded by the Greater Peterborough Museum Network, and the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough.

“The OFAH fishing event is the first in a series of summer events included in the Peterborough Welcome Pass,” said Jason Stabler, PPCII Coordinator. “The Welcome Pass encourages exposure to cultural amenities that make Peterborough the rich, welcoming community that it is. We are very fortunate to have dedicated partners like OFAH ensuring the success of this program.”

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 670 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest nonprofit, charitable, fishing, hunting and conservation-based organization in Ontario, and the voice of anglers and hunters. For more information, visit www.ofah.org.
