Take the Kids Fishing This Weekend!
Lots of fun for young anglers at Rice Lake Spring Fishing Festival this weekend

The Rice Lake Spring Fishing Festival is well underway, and the festival’s third and final “Kids Day” designed especially for youth, is happening this Saturday. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and official lead Travelling TackleShare program sponsor, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), are providing everything young anglers need to try fishing, at no charge.

The OFAH Travelling TackleShare booth will be set up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bewdley Township Park on Saturday, June 11. There is no charge to borrow the fishing gear; the OFAH TackleShare program is all about breaking down the barriers that keep kids from experiencing the joy of fishing. Participants simply sign out a rod, reel and tackle in the same way they would borrow a library book. The program is delivered to the public in two ways; through the OFAH Travelling TackleShare Program, which travels to events, and the OFAH TackleShare Program, which has approximately 100 loaner sites across Ontario.

“Fishing is a wonderful way to enjoy family time and to learn firsthand about the importance of conservation,” says Alesha Caldwell, OFAH Conservation Outreach Programs Coordinator. “The OFAH TackleShare program, sponsored by Ontario Power Generation, lends out everything that you need to try fishing. Parents are encouraged to bring their children out and we’ll do the rest.”

The 2011 Rice Lake Spring Fishing Festival is running until June 19. While the kids fish free, buttons are available for sale for adults who want to take part in the fishing festival, and the chance to win prizes and draws.

Youth under 18 years and seniors 65 and older do not need to purchase a fishing version Outdoors card. All Ontario fishing regulations must be followed, and can be found at www.ontario.ca/fishing.

Fishing enthusiasts and boaters should always take care around waterways. As part of its “Stay Clear Stay Safe” program, Ontario Power Generation offers safety tips and materials at www.opg.com.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 670 member clubs, the OFAH is the province’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization, and the VOICE of anglers and hunters. For more information, visit www.ofah.org.
