Pioneer Day at Bronte Creek
Eight local schools taking part in hands-on environmental education event
 Today, an exciting environmental and educational initiative is happening on Bronte Creek, thanks to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), Pioneer Energy and many other partners. Students from eight area classrooms will be releasing their classroom hatchery-raised Atlantic Salmon on Bronte Creek at 11:00 a.m. at Lowville Park, in the Village of Lowville. They will also be taking part in a series of workshops designed to heighten their awareness of our precious natural resources.
“Pioneer Day at Bronte Creek is a great example of like-minded organizations working together to engage youth in taking care our environment,” said Mike Reader, OFAH Executive Director. “Today, 180 children and their teachers, Pioneer Energy and several environmental organizations are helping bring Atlantic Salmon back to Lake Ontario, build bird feeders, learn to gauge water quality by the bugs found in the water, and much more.”
Pioneer Energy is committed to supporting fish and wildlife conservation by funding environmental education field trips across southern Ontario and hosting Pioneer Day, a conservation event, at Bronte Creek. Students are able to learn how they can help protect and conserve their natural environment during a fun, hands-on, outdoor excursion.

Helping with the Bronte Creek event are the Community Stream Steward Program, Trout Unlimited Canada, McMaster University Let’s Talk Science graduate student volunteers, and Oakville and District Rod and Gun Club.
The fish being released by the students were raised through the Bring Back the Salmon program, which is working to restore a self-sustaining population of Atlantic Salmon to Lake Ontario where they once thrived. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources jointly lead the program, with support from over 40 conservation partners, including title sponsor Ontario Power Generation, and sponsors LCBO Natural Heritage Fund, Banrock Station Wetland Foundation Canada, and TD Friends of the Environment.
