OFAH Congratulates Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Conservative Majority Government is Good News for Outdoors Enthusiasts
The Ontario Federation for Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) extends its congratulations to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative party for their majority win in Monday’s election. As the voice of anglers and hunters, the OFAH is pleased that its longstanding advocacy to scrap the long gun registry can now move forward under a majority Conservative government. At the same time, the OFAH looks forward to working with all parties and Members of Parliament on issues relating to angling and hunting and the protection of our outdoor heritage.
“Prime Minister Stephen Harper has long supported law-abiding licensed hunters and firearms owners in their bid to scrap the ineffective and wasteful long gun registry. He has on many occasions committed to ending the registry and we are confident that he will stand true to this word,” said OFAH Executive Director Mike Reader. “We also look forward to the creation of a national fish and wildlife advisory panel, which Prime Minister Harper announced in April.”
A national advisory panel on fish and wildlife resource management will provide a sounding board for conservation groups across Canada and a focus for activities at the federal level. Though fish and wildlife resources are chiefly a provincial responsibility, Environment Canada (Canadian Wildlife Service) and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) play key roles in the protection and enhancement of migratory birds and fisheries across the country.
Reader added, “Firearms owners have waited more than a decade for our government to scrap the long gun registry and instead introduce more effective measures to target criminals and address violent crime in Canada.”
