Outdoor clubs making a difference
Top fundraisers awarded at 83rd OFAH Fish and Wildlife Conference
It takes countless hours and significant financial resources to support fish and wildlife conservation initiatives in Ontario. Fortunately, there are Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) member clubs across the province willing to take on that challenge.
Every year at its annual conference, the OFAH recognizes the efforts of its member clubs that top the list of fundraisers through OFAH Conservation Lottery ticket sales. This year, the Georgian Bay Anglers and Hunters and Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association were honored during the President’s Reception.
“I want to thank the Georgian Bay Anglers and Hunters and the Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association, and many clubs just like them, for supporting conservation through the 36th Annual OFAH Conservation Lottery,” said Rob Hare, OFAH President. “OFAH member clubs are made up of hard working and dedicated outdoor enthusiasts that volunteer in communities across Ontario. They are making a difference to the health of our fish and wildlife and their habitat, and we are proud to recognize their accomplishments.”
The Bert Austin Trophy for highest sales went to three-time winner, the Georgian Bay Anglers and Hunters for selling an impressive 710 books of tickets. The Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association, also a multiple-time winner, took home the Windsor Sportsmen’s Club Award for second highest sales of 691 books.
In third place was the South Central Ontario Fish and Wildlife Association Inc. with 688 books of tickets sold; in fourth place for a second straight year was the NDHQ Fish & Game Club of Ottawa, with 639 books; and in fifth spot was Ontario Hunt Camps Association Inc., which sold 448 books of tickets.
Over five hundred delegates attended the three-day conference. On Friday, conference sessions were livestreamed via the Internet and may be viewed at www.ofah.org/conference. Speakers included Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey, OFAH Executive Director Mike Reader, Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea. Gord Miller, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario delivered the keynote address on Saturday evening.
