OFAH Research Grants Awarded
OFAH and Partners Contribute to Postgraduate Studies
The province’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), recently provided three post-graduate students with research grants to continue their scientific studies. The grants of $2,000 each were given out at the 83rd OFAH Annual General Meeting and Fish & Wildlife Conference, which was held March 17-19 in Mississauga.
“The OFAH is proud to continue our financial support for young researchers because sound scientific evidence is the foundation upon which the best decisions on natural resource management are built,” said Dr. Terry Quinney, OFAH Provincial Manager of Fish and Wildlife Services.
The 2011 recipient of the OFAH/Toronto Sportsmen’s Show Sport Fisheries Research Grant is Ashley Stasko, MSc Candidate, Laurentian University. Ashley is studying the effect of water clarity on food competition between Walleye and Smallmouth Bass in small Boreal Shield lakes.
Everett Hanna, PhD Candidate, University of Western Ontario, received the OFAH/OFAH Zone G Wildlife Research Grant. Everett is the first recipient to be awarded a grant for the same research project at both the Masters and PhD levels in consecutive years. Everett is studying habitat use, migratory behavior and vital rates of Sandhill Cranes on the North Shore of Lake Huron.
The OFAH/Oakville & District Rod & Gun Club Conservation Research Grant was awarded to Matthew Bond, MSc Candidate, Trent University. Matthew’s research project is titled, “Growth and spatial distribution of fishes in hydro-peaking and natural rivers of northern Ontario.”
Over five hundred delegates attended the three-day conference. On Friday, speaker sessions were livestreamed via the Internet and may be viewed at www.ofah.org/conference. Speakers included Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey, OFAH Executive Director Mike Reader, Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea. Gord Miller, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario delivered the keynote address on Saturday evening at the Conservation Awards banquet.
