Invasive plants under attack in London
Ontario Invasive Plant Council to host 4th annual symposium here

The Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC) is hosting its annual Invasive Plant Symposium in London on October 4th and 5th, with delegates coming from across the province to tackle the ever growing issue of nonnative plants invading Ontario. Many experts consider invasive species the greatest global threat to biodiversity next to habitat loss.

“The ecological and economic impact of invading plant species is already in the billions of dollars and is certain to increase,” says OIPC Coordinator Rachel Gagnon. “Bringing experts together to network and share their research and experience is just one way we’re working to fight the spread of invasive plants in this province. It is critical that we do everything we can to prevent new invasions and stop those already here from spreading further.”

This year, the organizers have added a second day to the symposium, with the first day offering hands-on tours and workshops. City staff will take delegates on an Invasive Plant Tour of the city, an expert will lead a behind the scenes tour of the Biotron Institute, and participants will get a first hand look at the new online Invasive Tracking System, which tracks invasive species sightings across the province. On day two, keynote speaker Les Mehrhoff, Director, Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE) will present the pros and cons of New England’s multi-faceted online early detection program. Other speakers will cover a range of topics, such as the cosmetic pesticides ban and the “unfriendly” giant hogweed.

The OIPC was formed in 2007, through the concerted effort of more than 100 organizations and agencies, to form an effective counter attack on plant invaders making their way into Ontario from sources around the world. The council provides leadership, expertise and a forum to educate, motivate and empower organizations and citizens.
