Invasive plants under attack
Ontario Invasive Plant Council to host 3rd annual symposium
October 28, 2009, 8:30 AM- 4:30 PM
Best Western Inn & Convention Centre, 930 Burnham Street, Cobourg
As part of its ongoing efforts to stem the onslaught of invasive plants into the province, the Ontario Invasive Plant Council (O.I.P.C.) is hosting its third Annual General Meeting and Invasive Plant Symposium on October 28, 2009 in Cobourg. This one-day event features a packed agenda and includes delegates from across the province.
The O.I.P.C. was formed in 2007, through the concerted effort of more than 100 organizations and agencies to form an effective counter attack on plant invaders making their way in to Ontario from sources around the world. Many experts consider invasive species the greatest global threat to biodiversity next to habitat loss.
"Bringing experts together to network, and share their research and experience is just one way we’re working to fight the spread of invasive plants in this province," says Rachel Gagnon, O.I.P.C. coordinator. "The ecological and economic impact of invading plant species is already in the billions and is certain to increase. It is critical that we do everything we can to prevent new invasions and stop those already here from spreading further."
Ellen Jacquart of the Nature Conservancy of Canada will deliver the keynote address, Success in Invasive Plant Management – How do we get there, and 25 other speakers will cover a range of related topics, such as the new cosmetic pesticides ban, the unfriendly giant hogweed, assessment procedures in Australia, education curriculum kits, and tracking invasive species.
The O.I.P.C. is a non-profit, multi-agency organization that facilitates a coordinated response to the threat of invasive plants. The council provides leadership, expertise and a forum to educate, motivate and empower organizations and citizens.
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Ontario’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation organization, houses the O.I.P.C. and supports its efforts. Visit www.ofah.org to learn more about the O.F.A.H. and its conservation efforts.
To report a sighting of an aquatic or terrestrial (plant) invasive species, call the O.F.A.H./M.N.R. Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711. Visit www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca to learn more.
