Barrie club takes prestigious achievement award
Local group chosen best in the province

The Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Conservation Club was honored at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) 81st Annual General Meeting and Fish & Wildlife Conference, held from March 19-21 in Mississauga. The local club received the prestigious Mary Pickford Trophy, which is awarded annually to an O.F.A.H. club that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to conservation during the course of the year.

"O.F.A.H. clubs like the Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Conservation Club are the backbone of this Federation," said O.F.A.H. Executive Director Mike Reader. "It is volunteers like these that deliver the on-the-ground conservation initiatives."

The club’s 2008 projects included reforestation, stream improvement, the Get Outdoors program, youth activities, Pitch-In Day, food plots, brush clearing to create wildlife habitat, duck banding, building duck boxes, and promotion of the outdoors to the public.

Since this award was first given out in 1940, the Barrie club has taken home the Mary Pickford Trophy three times. They also won in 1960 and 1989. Two other O.F.A.H. clubs, the Atikokan Sportsmen’s Conservation Club, and the Espanola Game and Fish Club, also received honorable mention.

The award is named after the late screen actress Mary Pickford, who was an avid angler.
