Speaking with One Voice workshop
Provincial council proposed to address invasive terrestrial plants

Invasive plants are an increasing threat to Ontario’s natural resources. Invaders such as dog-strangling vine, European buckthorn and garlic mustard smother and out-compete our native trees and plants. The potential impacts of invasive terrestrial plants are being identified from both an ecological and economic perspective, and while many organizations have recognized the danger these plants represent, thus far there has been no coordinated approach to dealing with this menace.

This past spring, several leading organizations formed an interim steering committee and drafted a framework to create a provincial council to work and speak with one voice on invasive terrestrial plants. The committee has organized a full day of presentations and information sharing at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. Approximately 200 representatives from government agencies, municipalities, environmental non-governmental organizations and others from across the province will attend.

The steering committee is comprised of representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (O.M.N.R.), Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.), Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Royal Botanical Gardens, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Landscape Ontario, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Nature, City of Toronto and Conservation Ontario. The O.M.N.R. and O.F.A.H. are providing financial support to the workshop.
