Ontario Fire Marshal and O.F.A.H. put safety first this fall hunting season

Fall hunting season is here, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Fire Marshal of Ontario have some important reminders for tens of thousands of Ontario residents who celebrate the traditions of safe and responsible hunting each year.

In response to a recent fire that killed three people at a hunting and fishing camp in the County of Haliburton, the O.F.A.H. is reaffirming a timely message from the Fire Marshal of Ontario: Remember to pack a new smoke alarm and extra smoke alarm batteries for cabins and seasonal hunt camps.

According to the Office of the Fire Marshal, anglers and hunters should also thoroughly check and clean all heating appliances (i.e., woodstoves, propane heaters, kerosene heaters, naphtha stoves and lanterns) and chimneys at their cabins and hunt camps before using them. Often small animals can build nests in chimneys that can cause a build-up of carbon monoxide inside the cabin.

As fall hunting season gets underway, the O.F.A.H. also reminds people to hunt safely and responsibly, and respect fellow hunters, landowners and others who enjoy the outdoors. No one, whether hiking, bird watching, fishing or hunting, has the right to use private land without permission, and landowner permission forms are available from www.ofah.org.
