O.F.A.H. volunteers kick-off Earth Day with major conservation work in CobourgIn the spirit of upcoming Earth Day, Pitch-In Canada and National Volunteer Week celebrations, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) and its conservation partners are, once again, doing their part to improve Ontario’s natural resources. A special media event, taking place on Friday, April 20, at Peace Park in Cobourg, will provide outstanding photo and video opportunities of hands-on, volunteer conservation work, including fish stocking, tree planting and shoreline litter clean-up. A special government announcement will also be made in support of conservation.
“This event is much more than a demonstration of hands-on environmental action, it’s conservation history in the making,” said Tara Borwick, coordinator of the Community Stream Steward Program, a multi-partner initiative led by the O.F.A.H. The Community Stream Steward Program coordinates the habitat restoration work of the new Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, another O.F.A.H.-spearheaded conservation program that is bringing back Ontario’s lost ecological treasure. Not since the 19th Century have Atlantic salmon flourished but thanks to an O.F.A.H. partnership including Banrock Station Wetland Foundation Canada, LCBO and many others, this important part of our natural heritage is coming back. Over 2,000 Atlantic salmon will be released in the Cobourg Brook as part of this major environmental event on Friday, April 20.
