Orono Creek gets a makeover in time for Earth Day

Attention: News Desk and Assignment Editors

It’s a dirty job but dozens of local volunteers and conservation partners of the Community Stream Steward Program are happy to pitch-in next week on a major restoration project of the Orono Creek.

Come rain or shine, this hands-on conservation event will take place on Tuesday, April 19, starting at 9:30 am, at 15 Station Road, in Orono. All media representatives are invited as this event will provide an outstanding photo opportunity and will showcase the efforts of local conservation-minded volunteers.

Organizers say that volunteer response has been overwhelming, creating a snowball effect of local interest and generosity. Over 30 volunteers are expected to participate, and donations of food, refreshments and equipment have been offered courtesy of several local businesses.

“Our volunteers are gearing up for a busy day of creek restoration work,” said Tara Borwick, coordinator of the Community Stream Steward Program. “Our goal is to plant over 400 native trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses to create a 15-foot buffer along a 340 foot section of Orono Creek. This is an important project that will demonstrate how installing natural cover creates excellent fish habitat and provides the cool shade necessary for preserving our coldwater streams.”

The Community Stream Steward Program is a pilot program of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, developed to help enhance productivity of coldwater streams throughout Northumberland and Peterborough counties, as well as Durham and Kawartha Lakes regions. Since its inception in 2003, the Community Stream Steward Program has inspired volunteer involvement by youth, community groups and private landowners.
