Federal Conservative Leader in synch with O.F.A.H. on firearms registry

In his keynote address to over 500 delegates at the recent Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ 77th Annual Wildlife Conference, in Toronto, federal Opposition Leader Stephen Harper took aim at the national firearms registry. His confirmation of his party’s stance against the registry and his promise to repeal it if he becomes Prime Minister, received a thunderous ovation.

“Nowhere is this blind, bumbling big brother attitude more evident than in the gun registry fiasco. If the same degree of planning and skill had been applied to a hunting expedition, only the deer would have come out alive,” said Mr. Harper. Calling the program a “ridiculous, bureaucratic approach,” Mr. Harper echoed the scathing indictment of the system by federal Auditor General Sheila Fraser and comments by retiring Toronto Chief of Police Julian Fantino, who said that the long gun registry does nothing to help police prevent or solve crimes.

“The O.F.A.H. appreciated Mr. Harper’s appearance at our Conference and his comments about the federal firearms registry and other issues of interest to the outdoor community across Canada,” said Mike Reader, O.F.A.H. Executive Director. “It was particularly refreshing to hear his views on a number of issues that are of concern to most rural Canadians.”

As part of his visit to the O.F.A.H. Conference, Mr. Harper also stopped to visit the Spring Fishing Show at the International Centre and met with provincial leaders from several wildlife federations across Canada before taking the stage to deliver the keynote address at the O.F.A.H. awards banquet. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, representing over 78,000 members and 650 members clubs is the largest non profit fishing, hunting and conservation organization in Ontario. The O.F.A.H. remains an outspoken adversary of the national firearms registry.
