Community Stream Steward Program hosts Open Houses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 9, 2004

Landowners and interested members of the public are invited to attend one of two Open Houses hosted by the Community Stream Steward Program on Monday, February 16, 2004 at the Pontypool Community Centre and on Monday, February 23, 2004 at the Tyrone Community Centre.

The Community Steam Steward Program helps to improve the health of local watersheds. The theme of both Open Houses is “Total Support Offered for Community Action on Coldwater Streams.”

“This program is about giving landowners and volunteers the support needed to effectively improve the health of their local cold water streams. We hope it will bring neighbours and community volunteers together to plan their own restoration projects using the Community Stream Steward Program resources for direction,” said Tanya Mackie, Community Stream Steward Program Coordinator.

Both the Pontypool and Tyrone events get underway at 7:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. Both nights are presented by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Ontario Wildlife Foundation, Kawartha Conservation, Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, Lower Trent Region Conservation Authority, Victoria, Durham, Peterborough and Northumberland Stewardship Councils, Ministry of Natural Resources-Peterborough District, Trout Unlimited, Sir Sandford Fleming College and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The Community Stream Steward Program is based in Peterborough and covers an area that includes Durham Region, the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Counties of Northumberland and Peterborough. Last summer the Community Stream Steward Program received a three-year $225,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to continue work on improving the local environment.
