Kids dump video games to Get Outdoors

About 100 youth leaders are unplugging their televisions, video games and computers as they gear-up for Ontario’s most sought-after youth conservation camp at the world renowned Haliburton Forest Wild Life Reserve.

Presented by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters,(O.F.A.H.), Get Outdoors Summer Leadership Camp promises to be “the best youth conservation camp in Ontario,” said Robert Pye, O.F.A.H. Youth Services Representative. The event is slated for August 5 to 11, 2003.

“Get Outdoors camp was developed as a training program for youth conservation leaders,” said Pye, noting that O.F.A.H. youth programs are a jumping-in point for kids’ inherent fascination for the great outdoors.

O.F.A.H. Get Outdoors Summer Camp brings together children, ages 8 to 18, for an action-packed outdoor experience. Kids from as far north as Dryden, to the high-rises of Toronto, will be descending on the scenic highlands of Haliburton County for this event. The O.F.A.H. is also pleased to have Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation youth members traveling to camp from that western province, said Pye.

O.F.A.H. Get Outdoors Summer camp activities include: a bass fishing tournament, leadership games and night hike, archery and target shooting, kayaking and swimming, a trip to the Wolf Education Center and much more. Most importantly, campers will learn about various conservation projects that they can bring to their community.

Two years ago, the O.F.A.H. launched its Get Outdoors initiative that has inspired the creation of 35 youth conservation clubs throughout Ontario and more recently in Saskatchewan. Last year, O.F.A.H. Get Outdoors was awarded the prestigious Canadian Wildlife Federation award for most outstanding conservation achievement in Canada.
