O.F.A.H. applauds Ministry’s support of fisheries projects

During his speech at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, (O.F.A.H.), 75th Annual General Meeting and Wildlife Conference in Hamilton on February 21, 2003, the Honourable Jerry Ouellette, Minister of Natural Resources, announced funding for two major fisheries projects to be undertaken by the O.F.A.H.

“The O.F.A.H. was pleased that the Minister attended the Conference and delighted to receive funding from the Ministry for these important fisheries projects,” said Mike Reader, O.F.A.H. Executive Director. “Without this financial assistance and the Minister’s backing, we could not undertake these valuable scientific studies in support of our natural resources.”

The funds announced by the Minister will support the Kawartha Lakes Walleye Study, which will determine how changes in the local ecosystem have impacted upon walleye growth. The funding will also support the delivery of an ambitious multi-year project, the Northeast Lake Trout Enhancement Project, aimed at ensuring the long-term health of a priceless resource.

The Minister also announced that funding has been approved for two smaller projects to be carried out by local O.F.A.H. clubs in southwestern Ontario. The first relates to wetland habitat creation and the second will support the creation of spawning beds for Lake Erie walleye in the Grand River.
